Ruth S. Cox Memorial Scholarship

The Ruth S. Cox Memorial Scholarship was established in 2019 at Western Washington University’s renowned Woodring College of Education to provide support for future teachers. The scholarship gives preference to students with financial need and may be used to pay any costs related to educational expenses, including, but not limited to, tuition, books, materials and supplies.

Ruth was dedicated to education. As a teacher herself, Ruth believed fiercely in the power of education to transform lives, and she generously supported countless students in the pursuit of learning. Her remarkable commitment and generosity were not only inspiring, but she empowered students to believe in themselves and enabled them to achieve higher levels of education.

This scholarship was established by Rory and Ali to honor the incredible impact that Ruth had in their lives. It is our hope that the establishment of this scholarship will carry on her legacy and help the next generation of teachers achieve their dreams far into the future. We are committed to $3,000 in direct scholarship support each year as well as achieving a $50,000 endowment by the year 2025.

We invite you to support education through a contribution to the Ruth S. Cox Memorial Scholarship.

The Ruth S. Cox Memorial Scholars: In the spring of 2019, the first-ever Ruth S. Cox Memorial Scholarship recipients were selected. Carissa David grew up in Costa Rica and is working toward her degree in Early Childhood Education. She plans to dedicate her career to promoting social justice for children and families through education and beyond.

Alexia Blackman grew up in Bremerton and is pursuing her educational journey at WWU’s Olympic College campus in Bremerton, a campus designed to help place-bound students achieve their educational goals without crippling debt. She plans to become an elementary school teacher and this scholarship will be a tremendous help in reducing the cost of her education.

This year's Ruth Cox Scholarship was awarded to Gabriela Aracely Serrano.
