Western's Merriman Financial Literacy Program (MFLP), led by faculty and students, is dedicated to improving financial knowledge, decision-making, and outcomes for students, alumni, staff, faculty, and the Western community.

Paul MerrimanThe MFLP is inspired by the award-winning work of WWU alumnus Paul Merriman, who in his so-called retirement has worked tirelessly to improve people's lives through education that furthers their financial literacy and improves their investing and retirement outcomes.

You may access abundant resources at The Merriman Financial Education Foundation website: https://www.paulmerriman.com/

At Western, Paul's efforts have enabled us to establish and expand courses in financial literacy, provide online learning through the IGrad platform, build and grow a financial literacy and wellness peer coaching program, offer a DIY Investing Course, and offer numerous workshops and speaking events to support students, staff, faculty, and community members in their financial journeys.

Here’s what people are saying about the Merriman Financial Literacy Peer Mentoring service:

  • “(The mentor) was incredibly helpful and great at explaining things. I have basically no knowledge of finance, and she was great at starting with the basics and then explaining from there. Her explanations were very skillful and she showed me on her computer what she was explaining as she went.”  11/13/24
  • "I really enjoyed my conversation with the peer mentor.  He answered all my questions and concerns, I really appreciate it how he reached out before our meeting and discussed what I wanted to touch base on and he prepared a lot for us to talk about.”  2/19/25
  • “It was pretty great! Will definitely be recommending to my friends here at western.  (The strategies and tools I found helpful were) budgeting strategies, saving strategies, high-yield investment account info, IRA and Roth IRA info.”   10/8/24
  • The peer advisor was very humble and willing to admit what they didn't know, but was also willing to help me do the research and provide me with resources! I actually enjoyed learning about financial stuff--and who knew that was possible?!   11/11/24
  • “Being able to see all of my expenses on excel helped me to visualize my financial situation.”  11/22/24

You can be a part of this crucial journey to make sure our students graduate with all the skills they will need to lead successful careers and personal lives, all starting with financial literacy!
