Photo by Jennifer Nerad.Western’s Merriman Financial Literacy Program (MFLP) is a student-driven operation dedicated to improving financial knowledge and outcomes for students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the Western community at large. Our unique program exists thanks to the generosity of WWU alumnus Paul Merriman, who in his so-called retirement continues to work tirelessly to improve people’s lives through financial education. You can find abundant resources at The Merriman Financial Education Foundation website linked here.
Over the last year the program has expanded our reach with the popular peer mentorship service. Our trained and empathetic student mentors guide our community to financial capability through 1-1 meetings and workshops.

We have a goal of reaching every single WWU student – and you can help us fulfill our mission!
Your extremely valuable gift will help support this very necessary work! Just $100 can pay for four 1-1 peer mentor appointments that can change the trajectory of a student’s life. A generous $250 donation funds two workshops that reach even more students!
Here are some highlights from the 2025-2026 academic year so far:
- Developed long-range partnerships with the Basic Needs Hub & Off-Campus Housing, including peer-to-peer training on budgeting and developing pathways to refer students to our services;
- Presented about the program to nearly 1,000 students through classroom visits;
- Our peer mentor team took a greater number of appointments in this school year than at this point in the previous year;
- Hosted successful workshops on budgeting to several student organizations.
Your gift will provide the means to continue our expansion and change even more lives in our community. Through sound and thoughtful financial management inspired by our namesake, every dollar donated to this program is put to work helping students.
