About the Engineering & Design Department

The Engineering and Design Department, in the College of Science and Engineering, offers students three accredited (by ABET and NASAD) Bachelor of Science degrees: Industrial Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Material Science Engineering (formerly Polymer Materials Engineering). These programs place an emphasis on practical laboratory experiences, in addition to theoretical coursework. Each program’s curriculum is designed with input from industrial advisory committees to prepare students for professional positions in industry.

Support Students Today!

Your gift to the Engineering & Design Department will fund scholarships, student-faculty research, and state-of-the-art equipment.

Here's how you can help students thrive!

Manufacturing students worked with Professor David Gill to patent the ArcSaw, a specialized saw designed to efficiently cut aramid honeycomb.

By gifting to the Engineering and Design Annual Scholarship Fund, you contribute to departmental scholarships. Your generosity will directly impact our students based on financial need and academic performance.

Help us build a more supportive and thriving student community in the Engineering & Design Department!

The Student Success Fund is a new initiative focused on removing small but meaningful barriers to student success. According to recent survey data, 45.4% of Western students experience food insecurity, reflecting a growing challenge across campus and other Washington colleges. Your gift will directly support a range of student-centered efforts, like a department food pantry, light snacks and beverages for student community meetings, shared community supplies, and small incentives that help students feel seen and valued.

These everyday supports go a long way in fostering a sense of belonging, boosting morale, and creating a welcoming environment where all students can thrive, academically, socially, and emotionally.

Together, we can make our Engineering & Design Department not just a place to learn, but a true home for our students.
