Hello from the Journalism Department at Western Washington University!

For the past 50 years our graduates have been found throughout the United States, writing and editing the news of the region, serving as public relations professionals in public and private organizations, working as photographers and multimedia specialists and upholding journalism’s civic responsibility.

The Department of Journalism provides students with educational excellence in an experiential learning environment leading to an understanding of the role of mass media in a diverse democratic society, while teaching critical thinking, and the ethical use of traditional and new media.

Supporting High-Impact Experiences

Our students often have the opportunity to extend their learning outside the classroom through high-impact experiences like participation in professional conferences and training workshops. These experiences deepen the educational experience and help students build their skills and networks. This year for Give Day, we aim to bolster the department’s ability to support students in their pursuit of high-impact opportunities by reducing the financial barriers that prevent students from taking part in these life-changing opportunities.

Your Impact

A university degree in journalism or public relations is an investment in the future -- both for the student and for society. Western’s Department of Journalism offers a variety of need-based and merit-based scholarships to help students and families make that investment. Your contribution doesn’t only support education, it helps preserve the integrity of our democracy. Western alums work as professional communicators for an impressive array of news outlets, companies and organizations. Their expertise helps inform public discourse and allows diverse perspectives to flourish.
