History Matters
The study of history is vital for our shared democracy and essential to a liberal education. Our department is committed to academic excellence and provides curricular offerings from the fullest possible range of locations, cultures, and experiences. A degree in history equips students to be effective citizens, lifelong learners, and to have thrive in a wide variety of careers. We help students by foster an appreciation for the diversity of human cultures and experiences, develop critical research and analytical skills, and hone their ability to communicate effectively, especially in writing.
Studying history encourages students to reflect on how the experiences of the past can help us better understand the challenges of the present. Your gift to the History Department provides much needed support so that we can best teach our students and continue to pursue cutting edge scholarship in diverse fields.
Conferences and Travel
Funds donated to the Darling Family Phi Alpha Theta Endowment aid students in attending future regional conferences of the Phi Alpha Theta National Honors Society (PAT), where they can present their research and receive awards for their achievements. PAT also provides students with opportunities to meet new friends, build professional networks, and organize history events for the public.
WWU History Undergraduates and Graduates at PAT Conferences (2023-2025)Scholarships
History Department Scholarships allocates direct financial support to capable students so that they can maximize their intellectual growth, enrich their experiences at Western, and prepare to meet their future goals. We want our history students to have a clear pathway toward a meaningful career and be wholeheartedly focused on their learning, not worrying about how they’ll pay for college or whether they’ll be faced with the burden of academic debt.
Library Acquisitions
The History Fund for Library Acquisitions creates opportunities for us to collect valuable, permanent resources for students to supplement their learning so that they can pursue their intellectual interests.
Endowed Professorship in Jewish History
