What is Society of Women Engineers?
Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a worldwide organization focused on empowering women in their STEM careers to reach their full potential as engineers and as leaders. SWE also moves to “expand the image of engineering and technology as a positive force in improving the quality of life and demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion” (swe.org). Members of SWE range from undergraduate college students to industry professionals from around the world. SWE provides opportunities for their members by hosting conferences with diverse and global networking opportunities, awarding scholarships to hardworking students to support their journey in studying STEM, and advocating for girls through K-12 outreach programs. Who is WWU SWE?
Our mission as the SWE chapter at Western Washington University (WWU) is to support, promote and encourage women of all ages, races, and backgrounds in their pursuit of having a future in the STEM field. Since 2013 when SWE became an official chapter at Western, our club meetings have focused on empowering people of all genders by giving them a voice and helping them seek opportunities to better themselves. WWU SWE serves students by providing professional development events and opportunities to build community within the department. Events have included hosting industry speakers, career Q & A sessions with company panels, major application workshops, and fun community building activity nights.

Why should you donate to WWU SWE?
Previously, WWU SWE has also provided students with the opportunity to attend the National SWE conference, which allows students to meet SWE members from universities around the country, engage with industry professional speakers, and network with company representatives. In the past, the WWU SWE chapter has attended the National SWE conference yearly. However, due to the lasting impacts of covid we have been unable to participate in the National SWE conference for the past two years. In this past March, a small group of club members had the opportunity to attend the local SWE conference in Seattle, which would not have been possible without the generous donations of donors. As we are currently in the process of building the club back up, we are hoping to revive the tradition and attend the next national SWE conference in October 2023. The WWU SWE chapter would appreciate funding in order to continue our mission. SWE wants to change the world of engineering for the better so that we can grow into successful engineers.
