Linguistics

Support students studying linguistics!

Our alumni are living, working, and contributing in exciting and important ways to their communities all over the world, including in China, Japan, Korea, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Texas, New York, Montana, Indiana, California, and all over the Northwest.

The Department of Linguistics can lead students not only to find interesting and engaging careers and jobs but also to give back to their communities in important ways. They are teaching, creating, writing, analyzing, and serving in a vast array of careers and civic engagement.

We now have a cohort of about 170 students, and an eager and active Associated Students Linguistics Club. Faculty from several departments contribute to our department, including from Modern and Classical Languages, Anthropology, and Computer Science. However, we are faced with the fact that we have become a “state-assisted” rather than “state-funded” school.

Your Impact

Your financial support can help the Department of Linguistics offer scholarships and awards to our outstanding and deserving students. We would like to be able to fully fund the costs associated with attending academic conferences and events outside of Western. Since we became a full-fledged department in 2019, our students have attended and presented at conferences in Arizona, New Orleans, Seattle, and virtually!   This opportunity makes all the difference as our students prepare to launch their careers.

"I’m the first in my family to go to college, and this scholarship has been so helpful in counteracting the huge costs that come with getting an education. Throughout my college experience, I have worked part-time as a student employee and currently hold three positions on campus. Receiving this scholarship has been so helpful because I have been able to work less and devote more time to my studies. I hope that future students able to receive similar financial aid." - Graham Blair, recipient of the 2020-2021 Linguistics Student Scholarship

Aspen Clark, '21

"Receiving the Linguistics Student Scholarship has been an affirmation of my love for this field and my ability to engage in meaningful work within it. In a year already filled with so many uncertainties and hardships, this scholarship awarded me with a greater ability to focus on my education and pursue my specific interests in linguistics. I so look forward to pursuing further education in linguistics and am able to do so thanks to the support provided by the Linguistics Student Scholarship". - Aspen Clark, recipient of the 2020-2021 Linguistics Student Scholarship
