Sociology

Please Help Support Sociology Students!

Sociologists study the world around us--families, schools, government, prisons, the world of work, cities and neighborhoods, friendships. Some might say that the role of the sociologist is to render the familiar unfamiliar. We utilize many data sources in our work, including census data, historical documents, transcripts from interviews, survey results, and observations of group behavior.

Our program is growing!  The Sociology Department awarded 144 degrees in 2019-2020, up from 92 degrees in 2012-2013.

Last year, your donations gave sociology students at Western the opportunity to present their research *virtually* at three academic conferences, including:

  • The Pacific Sociological Association Annual Meetings in March 2021
  • The California Sociological Association Annual Meetings in November 2020
  • The Globalization, Diversity, and Education Conference in February 2020

Our students thank you!  This short video highlights the ways your donations mattered for Erin Dalman-Oeth, Sociology’s 2020 Outstanding Graduating Senior:

Thank you for watching. We greatly appreciate your support to #WWUGiveDay! Please find us on social media.
