Canadian-American Studies
Help support our growing program!

We Care. In these uncertain times, YOUR GENEROSITY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE in our efforts to respond to the needs of our students who are facing financial hardship. Your gift will go directly to our Canadian-American Studies Student Scholarship fund which will help students with tuition, fees, and housing, both immediately, and into the next year.

We see Give Day as a way for the Western family to show our students how much we care about them. Please consider supporting their education and their dreams of making a difference.

Who We Are:

Established in 1971, the Center for Canadian-American Studies at WWU is one of the most well established Canadian Studies programs in the United States. The Center serves as a US Department of Education National Resource Center on Canada, in consortium with the Canadian Studies Center at the University of Washington and, since 1988, has been awarded Title VI support in recognition of its leading role as a center of excellence on Canada. A unique, multi-college collaboration at WWU, the Center supports critical and interdisciplinary inquiry into the historical construction and modern constitution of Canada and its relationship with the United States. The Center places particular emphasis on the interaction of diverse identities and claims to belonging in northern North America.

What We Do:

Together with our partner programs in Canada House (Salish Sea Institute, Border Policy Research Institute), the Center for Canadian-American Studies specializes in teaching about the Salish Sea transboundary region, Canadian-American relations, and Francophone Canada, including French language instruction. The Center offers two academic programs of study: Bachelor of Arts in Canadian-American Studies and Minor in Canadian-American Studies. The curriculum for these degrees is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on courses and faculty from four campus Colleges: College of Business and Economics, College of Fine and Performing Arts, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Huxley College of the Environment. Fully revised and updated in 2017, the Center for Canadian-American Studies’s academic programs enable students to gain national scale understanding of Canada, its relationship with the US, and the diverse and contested histories that shape the present. The curriculum prepares students for positions in education, business, government, communications, and international organizations in the US, Canada, and other areas of the world.
