The Management Information Systems (MIS) program at Western Washington University (WWU) is a thriving program at full capacity with over one hundred students. Our faculty members are dedicated teachers and researchers with expertise in business analytics, data base management, web programming, and application development. To prepare our students for their careers, our program provides a solid foundation of concepts, combined with hands-on assignments and projects designed to help students to apply the concepts and technology.
To supplement the academic program, we also offer extracurricular activities to enhance the professional development of our MIS students. Unfortunately, state funding is not available to support all of the costs, so we must rely on donations. For this year’s WWU Give Day we request your support to fund our “professional readiness” initiatives for students for the upcoming academic year. Our goal is to raise $2,500. The funds will make it possible for us to support the following activities and programs:
To encourage participation during this year’s WWU Give Day, the first $300 in gifts to the MIS program will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100 per donor) by a fund established by an anonymous MIS supporter. Subsequent gifts will be matched through WWU’s Give Day Challenge Pool fund.
A signature event for our MIS program is the annual WISC event which is held each spring. This event is designed to provide an opportunity for students to learn from professionals through activities such as “speed networking,” panel discussions, and informal discussion (see figures below). This year’s 7th Annual WISC was a great success and attracted over 40 IS professionals and 100 students (see photo below).
Provided below is a description of the event from one of the students who attended:
“Western’s IS Connection event was my first official networking event and I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend. Going to this event introduced me to the culture around a networking event and helped me understand what goes on during an event. I enjoyed the more casual feel of an event like this and look forward to attending more in the future. Being able to speak to both professionals as well as fellow peers was exciting and improved my networking skills. Talking about my professional abilities in a non-interview format was great and I am excited to continue practicing these “small talk” skills. The evening prepared me for the Career Fair the following day and helped hone my “pitch” about myself.” - Entry-level MIS Student
